Blaze contained but fire crews keep watch as wineries count cost

Waterbombers were sent to multiple fires as crews battled high temperatures, dry conditions and gusty winds yesterday.

Residents of Ballandean, in the winegrowing area south of Stanthorpe, were told to consider leaving their properties as an uncontrolled fire moved quickly through the area around 4pm, reports the Courier Mail.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire by 5.30pm but stayed overnight to strengthen containment lines.

Some of the local wineries have lost significant parts of their crops and Michelle and Tim Coelli, owners of Twisted Gum Wines, said the fire started only meters away from their property.

“We didn’t get any sleep," the couple said.

"The fire started on the neighbour’s place which is only a few metres away from our boundary.

"It was very hot, dry wind so it quickly ran away, I saw it probably five minutes after it started and it was already basically out of control."
