Dubbo resident and winemaker, Ken Borchardt features on the cover of the 2008/09 Yellow™ and White Pages® Dubbo directories as part of Sensis’ recognition of Australia’s local food and beverage heroes.
Ken Borchardt exemplifies this year’s cover theme ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ and was humbled to learn of his selection to feature on the front cover, having been nominated by members of the local Dubbo community.
Borchardt was a founding member of Macquarie Valley Vignerons in 2000. The group was formed to promote Dubbo wine and to help members develop their wine making skills. In 2004 the group amalgamated with Western Regional Cuisine to become Macquarie Valley Food & Wine Inc (MVF&W).
As a founding member and now Chairman of the organisation, Borchardt has helped promote many food and wine related events in the region including the Dubbo Farmers’ Markets and local food and wine festivals. He also established the Deep Dish Dinner which showcases local produce and matches the dishes with local wines.
In 2006 Borchardt launched the Hot Climate Wine Show, which is a major fundraiser for the Royal Doctor’s Flying Service, which has raised more than $14,000 to date.
Borchardt’s dedication to promoting local food and wine producers has drawn thousands of people to the area and raised the profile of the Dubbo food and wine industry.
“I am strongly committed to ensuring the Farmers’ Markets remain strong and viable, not only because of the economic benefits to be gained by the producers themselves, but also because the markets have become a focal destination where the local community can meet socially in a market environment, interact with the producers, purchase fresh, seasonal, nutritious and in some cases organic produce and value-added products and have a coffee and a chat,” Borchardt said.
“My main objective is to raise awareness of the diverse range of regional food and wine we have at our fingertips, and I see the Farmers’ Markets and the Deep Dish Dinners as a vehicle to maintain that awareness.”
“The Dubbo community is known for its diverse array of locally produced food and wine, so to be recognised on the cover during the ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ theme is an absolute honour,” he added.
Group Manager, White Pages®, Melissa Reynolds believes the ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ theme provides Sensis with an opportunity to recognise Australians who are making outstanding achievements in their local food and beverage industry.
“Australia is now so well known for its home-grown food and drink that people often associate certain produce or culinary personalities with a region of Australia. Ken is a great example of someone who champions local produce and celebrates his region’s local flavour for the benefit of their community,” Ms Reynolds said.
Borchardt replaces Robert Edwards on the cover of the Dubbo directory, who was featured last year as part of the ‘Champions of the Community’ cover theme on the Yellow™ and White Pages® directory.
