Double trophy win for Vidal Estate's Legacy range

One of Hawke's Bay’s oldest wineries has received two of the top accolades in the prestigious Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

Vidal Estate was awarded regional trophies for best white and red wines with its Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2012 and Vidal Legacy Syrah 2010.

To be awarded a regional trophy, a wine must first win a gold medal, then subsequently be judged the best in its region.

Vidal Legacy wines were named the best of the New Zealand wineries entered into the annual competition, currently the largest wine competition in Asia.

More than 40 international wine experts blind tasted over 2500 entries, looking for the world’s best wines to help consumers make their wine selections.

Hugh Crichton, Vidal Estate's winemaker, said it was an honour to be recognised at such a renowned competition, particularly for Chardonnay and Syrah, which are both Vidal Estate’s hallmark varietals.

“These results reinforce Hawke's Bay as a producer of top-draw Chardonnay and Syrah of an international standard," he said.

"The trophies reflect our great soils, climate and how the team focuses on quality from vineyard to bottle.”

Charlotte Read, Vidal Estate’s Asia market manager, who lives in Beijing, said the Decanter Asia Wine Awards has an excellent reputation in Asia and winning two trophies exceeded the team's expectations.

“Wins in wine competitions provide a great springboard from which to communicate with media, trade and consumers, particularly when establishing brand awareness in Asia," she said.

"China is particularly a rapidly growing market in which wineries around the world are racing to compete.

"Being awarded these trophies will definitely help Vidal stand out amongst the crowd.”

The Decanter Asia Wine Awards aims to recognise quality wines and provide consumers across Asia with a trusted source of recommendations.

Steven Spurrier, Decanter Asian Wine Awards co-chair, said the judges' standards and expectations were high and they only awarded medals to wines which would give consumers the utmost confidence.
