This year, Sensis is recognising local food and beverage heroes across the country on the covers of the 2008/2009 Yellow and White Pages directories, with Tanunda resident, Peter Lehmann featuring on the cover of this year’s Barossa Valley directory.
Lehmann exemplifies this year’s cover theme ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ and was humbled to learn of his selection to feature on the front cover, having been nominated by members of the local Barossa community.
Lehmann, affectionately known as the ‘Baron of the Barossa’, is a legend of the Australian wine industry for his championing of the Barossa and its independent grapegrowers.
Lehmann and his investment partners founded Peter Lehmann Wines (PLW) in 1979 in response to a serious over production of grapes which brought great hardship to the Barossa grapegrowing community.
Today, PLW is the largest buyer of grapes from approximately 185 independent grapegrowers within the Barossa region.
PLW’s premium bottled wines enjoy an award-winning international reputation including 2003 and 2006 Best Australian Producer and 2003 and 2006 International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.
PLW’s cellar door at Tanunda is a major visitor draw card, having been voted Best Tourism Winery in South Australia and Best National Tourism Winery.
“The Barossa is known for its diverse array of locally produced food and drink, so to be recognised on the cover during the ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ theme is an absolute honour,” Lehmann said.
