After changes of ownership, company growth and new senior winemaking personnel, Waipara Hills is emerging as a multi-awarded wine label in three levels.
Waipara Hills winemaker Simon McGeorge, was very pleased with the 2007 vintage, although some regional crops were lower. ‘We captured some lovely varietal characters and in the year that has almost passed since harvest, the best is emerging in the fruit and styles of the wines.’
The 2007 vintage of the Waipara Hills label with a RRP of NZ$19.99 has four wines: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, South Island Pinot Gris, Waipara Riesling, Marlborough Chardonnay. The range is already multi-award-wining, including 11 medals and a 5-star Cuisine Magazine recommendation for the Riesling.
Waipara Hills Southern Cross Selection is positioned above the Waipara Hills label, with a NZ$29.99 RRP and the range currently consists of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Awarded 5-stars in Cuisine Magazine and with a gold and two silvers, this wine can be found in good liquor stores.
The third new range will be launched shortly in New Zealand at NZ$39.99. Waipara Hills EQUINOX encapsulates the true essence of what Waipara Hills is all about. The South Island of New Zealand is known for its rugged beauty and wild weather where producing superb wine is both a challenge and a joy.
The result is unashamedly aromatic yet elegant and sophisticated. Like the winds from which it takes its name, this flagship range of wines from Waipara Hills perfectly captures the Soul of the South. When speaking of the first release of Waipara Hills Equinox, Simon McGeorge said ‘These wines have been made to express the best of the season and the vineyards they have been made from’.
The Waipara Hills Equinox range will include a Waipara Pinot Gris 2007and Waipara Riesling 2006. First look by one independent critic described the Equinox Pinot Gris as ‘superb in its concentration and flavours’. The Equinox Riesling has also received accolades before its official release including a gold at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards late last year.
Simon is quite positive about the future. ‘We have taken our time crafting the new Waipara Hills brand wiith its three separate ranges, the Waipara Hills label at NZ$19.99 RRP, the Waipara Hills Southern Cross Selection at NZ$29.99 RRP and the Waipara Hills Equinox at NZ$39.99. We now have a sophisticated new look, premium quality wine inside the bottle and this has resulted in wide acceptance both from the market and lovers of fine wine.’
