South Africa must 'look to Old World for answers', says wine boss

For South Africa to capitalise on the quality and originality of its premium wines, the industry needs to start taking notes from Old World wine-producing countries, according to Carina Gous who heads one of South Africa's largest wine producers, Distell Vineyards & Estates.

Gous said over the past 18 months, several leading critics have expressed growing enthusiasm for the country's wines, calling South Africa the "world’s most exciting wine-producing country with a thrilling selection of interesting, unusual, rule-breaking and quality wines".

According to figures released by information and measurement company Nielsen, South Africa is one of only two countries showing growth in the UK market's retail channel, with year-on-year volumes for the 12 months to April up 14 per cent, and value up 16 per cent.
