The November/December issue of Australian Viticulture provides some honest advice for growers looking to improve their business’ profitability amidst water shortages and grape price pressures.
On page 22 we introduce a new column titled ‘Profitable Viticulture’ written by McLaren Vale-based Tony Hoare, director of Hoare Consulting. Tony looks to vintage 2008 and provides a retrospective account of what can be learnt from bygone vintages. Among his many points of value to growers, Tony says awareness of international competitors and a focus on building relationships between wineries and grapegrowers will assist in creating a more sustainable future.
Industry strategist and adviser and OIV President Peter Hayes continues the theme of ‘survival strategies’ and considers the Australian wine industry’s product positioning in the world wine market. Peter’s ideas are valuable reading for growers concerned about the success of their region as well as their own vineyard.
In September 2005, Winetitles journalist Sonya Logan spoke with three growers in South Australia’s Riverland region to find out how the downturn in winegrape prices was affecting them. In this issue, Sonya revisits these growers to see how they are coping with the double effect of low grape prices and a water allocation of only 16%.
The entomology team at the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia gives a review of insect pests in Western Australian vineyards for season 2006–07. Keeping with the pest theme, we surveyed our readers about the extent of the bird damage they have had to deal with over the past five vintages. The results highlight the common problems facing growers across all regions and the methods being taken to control the bird damage.
Other highlights of this issue include the Chenin Blanc Varietal Report introduced by Jason Conti of Paul Conti Wines, located in the Swan District region of Western Australia, and the latest news from Wine Grape Growers’ Australia in its newsletter featured in each issue of Australian Viticulture, titled The United Grower.
