Provisor are putting together a winery operations benchmarking program to allow the wine industry to fully understand how efficient their operations are, to benchmark themselves against other similar-sized wineries and identify best practice and improvements that will have maximum impact on the bottom-line.
Involvement in the program will ensure that wineries have access to the very-latest operational data from across the industry, from high level KPIs down to detailed data for individual unit operations. All information and data will be managed through a web-based tool to ensure ease of use and complete confidentiality for participants.
The project is targeted to kick-off in January 2008 and will leverage funding from federal government. In order to ensure that the benchmarking program is a success and enough information is gathered for individual wineries to make meaningful comparisons against their peers, Provisor is calling for expressions of interest in the program.
Due to the urgency of this project and the need to begin preliminary discussions with industry on which measures should be included, a deadline of 26 November has been set. The success of the project will depend on gaining enough industry support to make the program worthwhile and using this support to convince the government that the project should go ahead.
The initial phase of the program will concentrate on six key regions across Australia: • Barossa Valley • Hunter Valley • McLaren Vale • Riverina • Riverland and • Sunraysia
If there is sufficient interest from other regions, then additional areas can be included in the program. At this stage, it is expected that the benchmarking program will be rolled out to remaining areas during vintage 2009. Participation fees are based on a sliding scale, according to the size of operation and are split 50:50 over the 07/08 and 08/09 financial years. A number of wineries at each scale of operation have already been signed up for the program.
