Following a stellar year for McLaren Vale wines on the national and international wine show circuit, the annual Winegrapes Australia McLaren Vale Wine Show judging has seen the toughest competition in years.
With a 2006 Jimmy Watson Trophy winner (Scarpantoni), a 2006 London International Wine Challenge Trophy winner (Wirra Wirra), a 2006 International Wine and Spirits Competition Trophy winner (Chapel Hill), a 2006 Hyatt Advertiser Wine of the Year Trophy winner (Gemtree) and a 2007 Japan Wine Challenge Best Red Winemaker trophy (d’Arenberg) the field was stacked with stars.
The 16 trophy winners announced to the media today (list attached) represent the cross section of McLaren Vale’s wine styles, winery sizes and regional perennial favourites with trophy winners including the 2006 Chalk Hill Barbera, 2007 Possum’s Viognier and the 2005 Eileen Hardy Shiraz.
From more than 600 wine entries these 16 trophy winners will compete for the coveted title of McLaren Vale Bushing King/Queen at the 2007 Winegrapes Australia McLaren Vale Wine Show Luncheon.
Wine journalist and special guest judge at the wine show, Nick Stock commentated on the quality of the field.
“Having judged at this show over the past couple of years it’s become pretty evident that the general quality of McLaren Vale wines is on the up. The varietal Shiraz and Cabernet as well as the Grenache blends coming out of this region are truly world class.”
Chairman of McLaren Vale, Grape Wine and Tourism Association, Jock Harvey, also commented on the region’s success at wine shows this year.
“As a collective group we have been winning gongs at just about every major show around the world. It says a lot for the local viticulturists and winemakers are seriously dedicated to producing the best possible wine from our region.
“We have worked really hard over the past five years and it’s exciting to think that some of the top judges and wine media are starting to sit up and take notice of McLaren Vale.”
