Charles Cimicky triumphs at Barossa Wine Show

Charles Cimicky has scooped the pool at The Barossa Wine Show held on 20 September 2007, scoring four trophies including the regions Most Outstanding Table Wine for the 2006 Trumps Shiraz. Charles Cimicky established Cimicky wines at Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley with his father Karl in 1972, and continues to craft regionally distinctive wines from the vineyards surrounding the picturesque homestead and winery. A self-confessed quiet achiever, Charles tends to let his wines do the talking, and was truly humbled by the attention. The 2006 Trumps Shiraz is the "entry level" wine in the trio of Shiraz produced by Charles and carries much of the character of its older "Autograph" (RRP $40) and "Reserve" (RRP $65) siblings for a modest $20 RRP. Both the 2003 and current release 2004 "Autograph" Shiraz were awarded "Best Red Wine" at the 2004 & 2005 Barossa Wine shows respectively, so the pedigree of Trumps is impeccable. Fermentation occurs in static temperature controlled fermenters with pump overs occurring daily after the cap has set. On completion the wine is left on skins to extract the full desired level of tannin, colour and flavour. The wine is gently extracted using Basket Presses, which although time consuming, Charles firmly believes give a better result. The wine is left to slowly develop in the small barrels stored in the cool, underground cellars at the Cimicky Winery. Charles' motto is "good wine begins from the earth" as such he practices minimal intervention in the winemaking process. This allows the quality and distinctiveness of the region, vineyard and fruit to come to the fore. "We don't want to produce over ripe, over extracted, over worked wines. It is the variety, region and vineyard that are most important to us," Charles said. The result is an exceptional, value for money, Shiraz that whilst very approachable now will also cellar well in the medium term.
