The 2007 Barossa Wine Show presentation dinner was held last night at historic Chateau Tanunda with over 300 guests enjoying a fabulous night of food, wine and excitement.
The chairman of the Wine Show Committee, Kevin Glastonbury, was enthusiastic in his appraisal of the Show.
“The 2007 Barossa Wine Show saw a record number of entries (554) and, at the same time, a record number of Gold Medals (58) were awarded to a wide range of companies, small and large, across a range of styles. These awards reflect the great vintages in the Barossa over the last four years,” Glastonbury said.
“We’ve seen new varieties win gold medals and again saw the Barossa strengths of Shiraz and Riesling winning many awards. A new class was the single varietal Grenache class which showcased another of the Barossa’s strengths. And of course, the Barossa fortified wines were outstanding in all styles.
“And this year, also for the first time, we were happy to provide the judges with Riedel glassware. I believe they were all enthusiastic about the change.”
In his second year as chairman of the judging panel, David O’Leary was equally enthusiastic.
“From my point of view, what stood out was the strength of the last three or four vintages in the region – just outstanding! The medal tallies were strong in both red and white varieties, with a lot of gold medals given across the board.
“Of particular note were the Riesling classes. Last year, only one gold medal was awarded in the one year or older category, while this year we had four golds in that same category. I believe this shows that the variety really does keep getting better as it ages,” O’Leary said.
