Men’s health the focus of upcoming wine auction

Men’s health organisation, Foundation 49, based at Cabrini Health in Malvern, Victoria, is calling on the Australian wine industry to support its fundraising effort by contributing wine samples to its forthcoming wine auction.

Foundation 49 was established in memory of wine writer Tony Hitchin, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 1988. At that time, Tony called on Australian men to take better care of their health. The organisation is supported by a group of men’s health experts, including medical specialists and community health workers and aims to help Australian men to live longer lives by preventing heart disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, obesity and more. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare statistics report that each hour in Australia, more than five men die from conditions that are preventable.

Auctioneer Stewart Langton, a supporter of Foundation 49 and good friend of the Hitchin family, has agreed to coordinate all aspects of the auction.

Langton remembers Tony with much affection. “In view of Tony’s love of wine and his concern for other men who might learn from his illness, this seems a perfect event to honour his memory – and a highly suitable foundation to support,” Langton said.

Tony’s career in journalism spanned 45 years. His widow, Jenny Hitchin, remembers how Tony’s appreciation of wine began during regular escapades through South Australian vineyards. A two-year stint in Paris and a dogged desire to learn as much as he could, led to a life devoted to fine wine and dining, culminating in his editorship of Epicurean magazine.

Associate Professor Gary Richardson, chairman of Foundation 49, asks Australian wine businesses to “raid your cellars and give generously to Foundation 49”.

“You’ll reach a large section of an affluent and wine educated audience from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs including Malvern, Armadale, Toorak and Brighton. Your details will be listed on the Foundation 49 website with a link to your business,” Richardson said.

Wine writer James Halliday, the Patron of the Tony Hitchin Memorial Wine auction, will host the event.

Contributors are asked to send the wine donations of a single bottle, a couple or a case before the closing date of 9 November 2007 to Langton’s, Building 5 Maple Close, 650 Church Street, Richmond, Victoria, 3121.
