Capel Vale, a Western Australian cool climate estate winery owned by Dr Peter Pratten and his wife Elizabeth, has been awarded the 2007 RASV Wine Show Trophy for having the Best Open Class Merlot Wine for their 2005 Debut Merlot.
This purely Western Australian cool climate wine has recently been released under the strikingly attractive new Capel Vale 'Debut' label series, aimed at the $15–20 retail market. Dr Pratten, who owns vineyards in the 4 coolest regions of WA (Pemberton, Mt Barker, Geographe and Margaret River) said he was very pleased that the show judges were now recognising the quality and finesse of red wine styles showing fruit driven elegance and complexity more recently emerging from the cooler climate regions of Australia, after years of wine shows favouring the more oak driven fuller bodied warmer climate styles.
He stated that the particular growing conditions in the south west of WA very much lent themselves to development of such styles and that these were now becoming well favoured in the mature wine markets of the old world as well as here in Australia.
After thanking the winemaking team, Dr Pratten went on to say that the smaller family owned wineries controlling their own fruit production were increasingly important to the industry as a whole because they were driven by their very survival needs to move quickly to maintain consumer interest in their wines, and they had to use this advantage with the ability to stay at the 'cutting edge' of style development.
He said that Capel Vale was a good example of such a producer that encompassed the whole production cycle from the ground through viticulture, winemaking and packaging to meet the changing requirements of the global market.
Capel Vale has long maintained certified QA at every production function including HACCP, ISO and BRC. This has helped the business to reach its current position as one of the outstanding Western Australian producers.
In July 2007, Capel Vale released 3 new and beautifully packaged ranges of wines: the Debut series of WA wine styles, the Regional Series of cool climate varietals, and the Single Vineyard series of iconic wines under its ‘Whispering Hill” vineyard label.
