July/August issue of Australian Viticulture out now

The July/August issue of Australian Viticulture is themed, ‘Winter in the vineyard’, and contains valuable information to assist growers and vineyard managers through this season to ensure a quality 2008 harvest.

Winetitles journalist, Bianca Turner, scoured Australia and New Zealand to compile a summary of this year’s vintage conditions and discovered that growers still found reason to smile with good quality fruit coming from some of the toughest conditions including frost, drought and bushfire.

David Braybrook of VitiSolutions advises how to manage vineyard pests and disease in the dormant period. Powdery mildew, phompsis cane and leaf spot, Eutypa and other trunk diseases, mites, mealybug, borers and lightbrown apple moth are just some of the things that fall under his scope.

Sonya Logan attended the Barossa leg of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology’s drought management workshop in early May this year and in this issue, reports on the presentations delivered in the session titled ‘Vineyard Management Tools’. The research findings are vital for all Australian viticulturists.

Tasmanian correspondent, Mark Smith, speaks with Tolpuddle Vineyard’s Geraldine Colombo and Dr Jo Heazlewood and reports on the current frost management research being undertaken in his home State.

Kathleen Quealy, co-founder of Pinot Gris specialists, T’Gallant, introduces this issue’s Varietal Report and explains why she’s so passionate about the grape and resultant wine.
