In the July edition Australian & New Zealand Grapegrower & Winemaker it's congratulations all round.
Charles Sturt University’s Michelle Sutcliffe has been awarded the inaugural Winetitles Publications’ Scholarship and Australian company Memstar won the Wine Industry Suppliers Association’s first WOW award. Congratulations.
With a new fiscal year underway and an election looming the time is right to explore what your options are for the coming months. Grapegrower & Winemaker’s new political reporter Eric Cummins begins his first of a series of articles in the countdown to the Federal election with a look at the South Australian electorate of Barker, presently held by Liberal Party MP Patrick Secker.
In trade policy terms 2007 is proving to be interesting. There could be some positive outcomes for the wine industry. But, as always, there is no sign that there will be any lessening of international competition enhancing trading conditions in 2007, although the drought and frosts that affected the vintage might put some upward pressure on prices. Winemakers’ Federation of Australia’s Tony Battaglene has provided an explanation.
The Australian Wine Business section features a report card on the Australian wine industry. Paul Averay from GE Commercial Finance has highlighted the present state of play and what lies ahead. And Tongue Marketing Agency’s Rory Kent examines the potential of wine price rises and how businesses can best introduce them to the market place. Jim Moularadellis from one of Australia’s leading bulk wine brokers, Austwine, analyses the key aspects of the bulk wine market following the 2007 vintage.
In the vineyard it’s probably all about pruning for most of you at the moment so Victorian Department of Primary Industries John Whiting provides advice on phylloxera protection.
There’s a frost feature article from New Zealand and the findings of Italian-based research into machine harvesting. And in the winemaking section barrels, education and laboratory equipment are all featured.
