The 2007 Canberra International Riesling Challenge hopes to uncover the world's best Riesling during this year's competition which is shaping up as the biggest and best yet.
Entries in the event are already pouring in from all over the world and for the first time this year, all entries will be competing for a new 'Best Riesling in the World' trophy.
"The decision to introduce a 'Best Riesling in the World' trophy wasn't taken lightly," said Ken Helm, Chair of the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.
"The growing number and outstanding quality of entries prompted this suggestion from entrants, judges and, importantly, a number of consumers. Entering our eighth year, it seems a logical and very exciting step forward for the Challenge.
"The Challenge is now a truly international competition, boasting a world-class judging panel. Last year we had more than 450 entries with over 100 from Europe and a growing number from North America.
"We anticipate the opportunity to lay claim to the title of 'Best Riesling in the World' will be irresistible to many winemakers, particularly in the birthplace of the famous wine, Germany and beyond."
Helm said that there is already plenty of interest in the 2007 competition from all over the world. Entries will close on 20 July 2007 and it is anticipated there may be as many as 500 entrants this year.
"We are also thrilled that, for the first time this year, there will also be a special trophy to recognise the best Tasmanian Riesling in the competition.
"This trophy is being sponsored by the Tamar Valley Wine Route Inc and further demonstrates the enormous support for the Canberra International Riesling Challenge from right across Australia."
The 2007 Riesling Challenge will again be hosted by major sponsor, the Hyatt Hotel Canberra, from 16 to 20 October 2007.
